Barbara Hulme Artist Statement

I am a disabled artist on a mission to empower disabled people etc. to achieve representation by painting personal, sensitive portraits of them in watercolour. and help the general public realise that these health issues can happen to anyone through trauma, illness, accident or other reasons. My intention is to influence people to be more empathic and understanding and to give people with disabilities a voice.

In my series of portrait collaborations, I ask the subject to send me a photograph of themselves looking and feeling good, one they are happy with, and then I create the portrait from that photograph. I ask them to send me their stories in 400 words or less, which accompanies the finished portraits.

The Health Series I am working on portrays the subjects in a positive light, showing the audience that those of us with these disabilities really are both relatable and unique. My collections on Mental Health, Men's Health, Women's Scars and All Collection and Women's Health, are in the same vein which I have been concentrating on for the past couple of years.

The feedback I’ve received from disabled people has been very positive. They really appreciate the fact that I do not portray them as figures of pity, or of medical interest, but as people. An approach, apparently, that is new and innovative.

I have been making art for the past 40 years and my work is in watercolour with the occasional splash of gold ink up to an A3 size Max on watercolour paper.

In December 2022 I was Artist of the Month for Outsidein Arts. I have exhibited at Sotheby's 2022/23 , Project Ability, Brighton and Hove museums, Chorlton Arts Festival - Manchester 2023 and 24. Paris at the Drawing is Free 10 Year Anniversary Exhibition at Paris College of Art and exhibited at Waterside Art Gallery in Sale, Manchester and at Level arts exhibition in Derbyshire in 2023. I have also featured 4 times in Disability Arts Online Magazine 2022 and 23 and have been featured in Discover Magazine in the July 2023 Issue. I have also Just featured in Haus a Rest zine arts magazine along with the written word of one of my collaborators Laura, and Just done an interview with Canvas Rebel Magazine yet to be released.
