I'm 37 years old, based in the Midlands and I've painted on and off for years. I mostly like using acrylics on canvas or card, but have also dipped into other mediums such as dot work (when the time for staring at a card and creating thousands of tiny dots presents itself!). I like focusing on iconic characters in popular culture from film music and television, in black and white but often with contrasting backgrounds.
My path into fundraising for MND is a bit of a strange one. Living in Leeds while at Uni, I fell in love with Rugby League. Rob Burrow was one of my favourite players. I knew instantly that I wanted to do something to contribute towards helping a brave man like Rob, as well as the thousands others just like him.
After Covid had settled down I wanted to join the fight. So in October 2022 I set a goal, inspired by (Sir) Kevin Sinfield to run across Scotland, coast to coast in one hit, in April 2023. The best thing about taking this on was coming across a lad on a podcast who was talking about his recent diagnosis. This man was Mark Williams.
Mark talked about recent events in his life and his family in a way that made me feel I had to send him a message, just to let him know there were every day people out there, with no immediate links to MND, who were willing to fight alongside them. Since that message, we've stayed in close contact ever since and I'm proud to have gained a brother as a result of running across Scotland. Mark actually has a piece by me at his house of Randle McMurphy, Jack Nicholson's character from One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
A little while after finishing running across Scotland, Mark knew that I had ideas for other events. I'd mentioned wanting to do Pen Y Fan in Wales ten times in 24 hours and we discussed the idea of setting up Mark's own trust under the banner of MNDefiance and taking on this challenge to raise money for families who were dealing with MND. Fast forward to April 2024 and we'd assembled a team of the finest men you could hope to tackle the "10-4-10" (ten summits for ten families). We started at 1800 on the night of 19th April 24 and walked up and down Pen Y Fan continuously until the next day. On the tenth summit, we took Mark and his good friend Ed Slater up to the peak in adapted chairs. There are no words to describe that feeling of getting Ed, and especially Mark, up to the top of that mountain together. I still can't quite believe that we did it. An unforgettable 24 hours.
Knowing that I paint a bit, Mark put me in touch with Artists Against MND on an Instagram post and here we are! I'm proud to throw my hat into the ring for such a worthy cause. It'll be nice to use painting as another avenue into making a difference in the world of MND as well as hopefully working towards a world without it.
